Statement of Purpose
People from diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds are inherently able to work and live together with respect and harmony.
Prejudices, fears and stereotyping about people who are different from ourselves are learned behaviors that often interfere with healthy communication and trust between individuals and groups representing different racial, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Just as these behaviors are learned, so can they be unlearned.
This is a process that takes time and that involves an intellectual (head) and emotional (heart) and social-action (hands/feet) commitment on the part of each person.
We use SMARTIE Goals!
- S - SPECIFIC: Does each goal clearly state what is to be accomplished? Where appropriate, does it
- M - MEASURABLE: Does each goal refer to a measurable outcome? Does it set a standard that will allow the team to know whether the goal has been met?
- A - ATTAINABLE: specify where and by whom activities should be carried out?
- R - RELEVANT: Will attaining this goal make a difference in the delivery of services? Is the goal aligned to other goals?
- T - TIME-BOUND: Has a time frame been established for achieving the goal? Have shorter-term benchmarks been set so progress can be monitored along the way?
- I - INCLUSIVE: – Are multiple racial perspectives involved in the planning? Does this goal invite traditionally excluded individuals into the decision-making process and contribute in a way that shares power? Does it include a way to ensure equal access to the strategies for historically marginalized communities by addressing the Opportunity Gap?
- E - EQUITY: In what ways are you maintaining status quo or advancing race equity and inclusion? Does the goal address disparity between BIPOC staff/community and income disparities? Does this goal address systemic inequities? What could be done differently to better support or advance race, equity and inclusion?
Community Engagement & Outreach Firm
- EPU Consultants, LLC were awarded contracts in 2016 and 2022 to engage the community in the search for a new superintendent for Minneapolis Public Schools.
- We were also instrumental in the engagement around the superintendent search (2021) for Intermediate District 287 and the Chief of Police search (2023) for the City of St. Louis Park. Collaborating with executive search firms to create the conditions for building authentic cross-cultural competencies where harm is eliminated, and every person’s humanity is acknowledged and valued.
